Images For Critique: Harvey Johnson - 4/6/13

This landscape image is part of the Lonesome series by student photographer Harvey C Johnson, Jr. titled “Hollywood Richmond VA”. The image is strong because of the captured scene. First there is pronounced blurring in the foreground because I was in motion and had my camera exposure time with a setting of 1/80 second. Second, the F-stop was set at f/13. Third, the ISO speed was set at ISO-250 in order to reduce the amount of noise aberration in the image. Fourth, the focal length is 85mm and the spot metering mode was applied. With all the above application techniques working together they produced a deep depth of field with good lighting with the primary object captured in the middle of the image.

This portrait was composed by student photographer Harvey C. Johnson, Jr. that’s included in his Lonesome series. The photograph is titled “Secluded”.  First it encompasses all the elements of a strong portrait because of the interesting composition. The second reason is because of the implied motion, which is freeze motion with an exposure time of 1/100 second enough to stop the swaying of the trees on a windy day. The monochrome condition was established to bring out a collapsed appearance of loneliness. While having a shallow depth of field in the foreground that includes the main subject standing strong, the subject is facing a deep depth of field in the background. The focal length used was 28mm. The texture is multi-dimensional on the landscape of the portrait primarily because of the way the light hits the terrain.
