Shannon Richardson, Artist Post, 4/15/2013

The artist that I chose for this week is Gary Jones.   I am by no means a bird watcher, but over the past couple of weeks, our assignments on landscape images have been more appealing than the portraits.  I chose the first picture because I loved the colors of the feathers on the bird.  I have never seen such a bird.  I like the artist's use of shallow depth of field to draw the viewers eyes to the subject.  I noticed that the majority of his pictures of the smaller birds use a shallow depth of field and the images of the larger birds have a greater depth of field.  The images are sharp and have vivid color contrast.

The second image also uses a shallow depth of field.  I like this one because of the details that are visible.  Even though the birds eyes are black and can easily blend in with the fur, you can see them.  This image kinda seems as if the bird is "posing".  I know it must have taken many shots and extreme patience to get the right angle/shot of the bird.  I can also tell by the branches that the bird is on a blossoming tree of some sort.  This is definitely a spring time photo but not necessarily what I would imagine.  It is obviously Spring, but there is not direct sunlight, yet it still has the Spring feel to it._DSC9102
