Amy McVaugh, 1.27.13, Artist Post

This week I chose Jason Frank Rothenberg as my featured artist. Normally not a huge fan of abstract, I was oddly drawn to his series entitled "Simple Times". The pictures have multiple meanings, most of them humorous in their reflection, but with a deeper meaning hidden underneath. It wasn't until I started writing my post that I realized the book he had created these pictures for was written by Amy Sedaris. I firmly believe that she is the sister of  my favorite satirical writer, Dave Sedaris. The tone of her book is the same as Dave's writings. This only intrigued me more as I was able to further understand that the  purpose of the book is to both find humor in reminiscing on one's youth, and also realizing underneath that humor is often what can hurt us the most. It is also a tribute to surviving hard financial times and realizing where our not only our strengths, but our weaknesses come from. Mr. Rothenberg's artistic creation of growing up in in the working class 60's and 70's with a dysfunctional family  who love one another is spot on, in  my opinion.
