Brittany Shaw 1/13/13 Artist Post "Sally Mann"

I picked Sally Mann. Sally is a local to Virginia whom has always created art from her home, the things around her, and most of all her loves. Her early work is lighthearted and twisted in some aspects, it pushed the envelope when it was a novelty and caused an uproar among republicans of the time. I love Sally because she's a rebel, she'll do what she wants and doesn't give a hoot what you think about it. I fell in love with Sally's work after watching her documentary, "What Remains" which is an EXCELLENT documentary and well worth the watch. It can be found in three parts on Youtube (so, seriously...go watch it.)
But Sally's work isn't all lighthearted like the pictures I put up, if you go do some exploring on her website you'll discover that Ms. Sally has a thing for rot and decomposition. She has a Body Farm collection of pictures taken of dead bodies. The reasoning for her unique angle on decay is explained in her documentary. Even the cameras Sally uses are broken and "decayed" film cameras from what seems like centuries ago. All in all Sally Mann is probably my most beloved photographer thus far and if you're new to her works please, i beg you, PLEASE, at least watch the documentary on her beautiful life.
