Daniel Ewert - Artist
This week I chose an artist by the name of Daniel Ewert, an absolutely remarkable nature photographer. He discusses on his website that he uses the saturation and contrast controls on his camera to closely mimic the results that old film cameras would get using Fuji Velvia film. I like the style of his images, they are very vivid and incredibly dramatic in a low key way. Some of his photos you can see how he adjusts the exposure on his camera, sometimes even using two exposures, to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene. This first photo above has so much detail and is such a mystery at the same time. When you first look at this photo naturally your eyes are brought towards this old, rustic, beaten down mill and then you begin wandering around the image noticing all the subtle details. He took this photo in early fall judging by the four different colored leaves in the shot, you get brilliant detail of the moss on the tree up close and also the old stone foundation of the mill. The second photo is cool to me personally because I am a weather buff so I love storms and this represents a great summer rain shower. You get the brightness in the grass up close and the cloud detail at 10 miles away, I thought this photo fit in great with the discussion last class about depth of field.
