Christian Patterson-Artist
I chose this artist, Christian Patterson, because I feel a personal connection with the imagery he published in his series of "Sound Affects". Growing up in the 70's and 80's was a time in history which presented society with changes in public moral values. The top image reflects the party-hardy philosophy that coincided with the sex, drugs, and rock and roll mantra often adopted from the effects of the Vietnam war. Notice the small American flag displayed in a non-honorary position next to the scantily clad woman. The flag was important enough to display in this seedy area, but almost strictly as a memory among the bar, video poker machine and filthy floor. It makes me wonder what the people who patron here are trying to avoid by drowning their sorrows. The bottom photo is the complete opposite, almost as if it may have been painted outside of the above photo, encouraging the people to "clean up their life" (i.e., the broom), put down their beer (empty cup) and to repent of their sins to find true salvation. Even if life is sometimes dirty and worn, beauty can be found if you seek it.
