Shannon Richardson, 1/13/13, Post for Critique

I think to "mean a picture" is to take a picture with intent.  Taking a picture  that "you mean" involves deciding what you want to capture before you even pull out the camera.  The picture should capture a moment and be able to tell a story.  If you capture a picture that you "mean" I think you should be able to look back on the picture and recall exactly what you were thinking and how you felt the moment the picture was taken.

This picture was taken in the evening after school.  That day I had been in classes from 9am to 5pm and I had just gotten home.  Although I have two years until I graduate, I am almost at the halfway point.  This was my first day wearing my uniform with my student ID affixed.  I wear scrubs all the time but I just felt different about myself after putting on my freshly laundered and pressed uniform.  I was filled with a sense of accomplishment.

Nursing programs are EXTREMELY competitive and for the last few years the only thing I have wanted was to be enrolled in school full time.  For three years I tried to get into a nursing program and was initially only hoping to get accepted into an associates degree program.  Each time I went to apply something would happen and I took that as a sign that I was not meant to go that route.  I took a chance and applied to Bon Secour's BSN program, never actually thinking that I would get in.  Now that I'm in my second semester of my sophomore year, I feel that I have earned the prestige that comes with wearing the uniform.  I still have a ways to go and it's difficult, especially while working full time, but it makes me appreciative of where I am and keeps me determined to continue my hard work.

This photo means hard work, determination, accomplishment, and growth.
