The artist I chose to feature this week is Dutch photographer Hans Van derMeer. The reason I selected Mr. Van derMeer is because I lived in Holland for 6 months in 1988. As a matter of fact, the picture on the bottom is from the town I lived in, Vlissingen. Most people think of windmills, tulips and the red light district of Amsterdam. While there is indeed plenty of those scenes, I was fascinated and drawn to the beautiful countryside speckled with sheep, cows and other various livestock. The people were very well educated, multi lingual and very open minded in their thinking. I could share all of these wonderful memories all day long, but the real reason I chose Mr. Van derMeer is that I love the authenticity he shares of the Dutch people. In this instance, the beauty of his photography serves not just an aesthetic purpose but also documents a personal time in my life filled with adventure and discovery. By looking closely at the scenes he captures, it sheds much light on the culture of a country similar to ours, but yet vastly different. His photography is based on documenting the Netherlands in an accurate way to portray their lifestyle over the course of many years.
