Justin Piaoan 2/17/13 Artist Post

Samantha West

I found Samantha West through tumblr. To discover more about her, I clicked on her website and immediately was intrigued by the title of each of her projects or series. There aer the following: Musings, tears, music, personal, advertising, fashion, and portraits. the ones I scanned the most were musings, personal, and portraits.
The first two pictures are from portraits. I love and hate the compositions. I love the first due to the texture, and how it flows so well. though yes, it's a head on shoot of a photograph, but it's done with such finesse I can't help but stop appreciating it. the second one from portraits balances negative and positive space well and honestly without the 1/4 of negative space present the picture would have just been bland. I would like to say, that she tried to capture this guys multiple personality disorder or something crazy that best suits him! I hate both of these pictures because, it leaves me wondering " How did she do this, and I am in Felines with her...", where did she shoot these portraits? How did she shoot these portraits? What was going through her mind at the time to capture these individuals?
The third picture is from her personal collection. THIS.. is how it honestly is in pictures in a gathering of friends. Not that generic shit of " 1,2,3 CHEESE". There is always that one moment where everyone after laughing and throwing a joke, or important conversations; the whole situation turns calm and everybody is either looking at each other or away from each other. they are thinking of what to say next and this is why I love this picture. It captures the company that she keeps.
The last picture is from musings. this is my favorite out of all of the musings. It's one of those pictures that has something left to be desired each time. It reminds me that a woman always has mystery and as men we will not fully understand women, for we are all oddities in the best and worst ways possible. They are not there for us to understand, but accept them who they are, show them, guide them away to break away from their vulnerability, show compassion, and love, build them to who they can be, as us to them accepting the loves we deserve. This picture also brings me back to thoughts of that someday of who will I end up with and sheds that bittersweet feeling. Samantha West is now one of my favorite photographers.
