This week while I was looking at the pictures by photographer Bryan Schutmaat I saw a lot of sadness and beauty. His photos seem to take on different meanings when you look at the portraits vs. the landscapes. I chose the portrait above because I felt like I could read his thoughts. He seems sad and worried. It could be that he has lost his job or is homeless. It stirs up sadness and the need to help him. To me it is amazing how an expression on someones face can be read so clearly if you open your mind. I feel that a strong portrait should give you some insight into that person with that being said an unplanned and unexpected portrait would be most effective.
I chose this landscape from Bryan Schutmaat's collection "Grays The Mountain Sends" because I appreciate the beauty of water and the clouds in the sky. This picture depicts serenity and peacefulness which to me is an extreme difference from his portraits. I look at the details of the water and the stillness that is captured by the camera. The shadows from the trees are a little mysterious and the brightness from the sky adds the light to the picture. I like the way he uses depth of field to give you the illusion that it goes on forever. To me a strong landscape photo tells a story of our world and the people that surround us.
