Cameron Gowen, Images for Critique, 3/31/13

I enjoyed the assignment for this week, I went to a lot of different locations taking pictures. Honestly I have to say I experimented with a lot of things I hadn't really experimented with before. The first photo was taken on the side of a gas station I stopped at, I really liked the idea of having someone in the environment it was simply but not too simple to me. The second picture was an exposure shot, I love how the color of the sky turned out in the background as well as the mold showing up really well on the shed doors, this was my still life photo. The third photo was my object in an environment photo and for this one i wanted to do some extreme depth of field with the other pool balls. The fourth and final photo I chose for this week was different but came out well, I wanted to experiment with using whatever light sources were provided to me in this case it was only a fire inside of a barrel.

The first image is the one I chose for my object within a landscape.  This photo was taken using a telescopic lens on campus.  The second photo is the image I chose for my portrait within a landscape.  Of all the images I took, I feel the second one shows more of the landscape than the other portraits I took.

This portrait is strong. It illustrates what illusive piece that the boy seeks, which is a counterpart hence the portrait of the woman he holds in his hands. I question myself: Does he need a sweet escape from his living conditions? Is he happy? or is chasing the feeling of feeling again like we all universally think about?
This portrait to me speaks volumes in ways of who is this man. This piece is called the diamond dollar general interview. What I have gathered is that he is teetering on half confidence due to his approach of how he mannered himself in the interview. Now doubt clouding him, he is angry not only with himself, but that his ride is taking forever. He even bought an item in the bag to make himself look good that he is an avid customer to the dollar general, but never the less a necessity.
From my perspective I see this as a statement that those that live here are no stranger to death. They have accepted death and know to understand to life. They are an established family who have found and nestled into a home that they and children to come will build upon, but the occupants at the present have accepted this is the house that they will die in.

For my artist post pictures by Susan Worsham I chose these two specifically because I really liked the depth of field in the first photo, as well as the simplicity of it. Its a great photo but there's not too much going on, focus is on point, and the lighting is done very well. The second photo as well has great lighting, everything is in focus, and its just a great photo. It especially caught my attention because it is a piece of history. It makes you wonder what it used to look like, and what all happened there, perhaps why did it close down?

I enjoyed this weeks assignment. My photos were taken in various places and I again was fortunate enough to meet several very nice people. Ultimately I ended up with way more pictures of interesting people than I could use.
The light was best on Saturday and it enabled me to get several nice images that utilized the light. The bottom photo with my husband didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. The headlights on the car didn't illuminate as much as I had thought they would on a cloudy day.
For once I actually had a problem selecting my pictures for the week because I had so many I really liked.

Not really much to say about my images asides that I kept my mouth shout and followed my cousins around for a whole day and conjured these beauties. Happy Easter to everyone!

I chose the top photo as my enviromental photo.  It is a strong photo to me because it tells a story.  Maybe it is a possible form of shelter or a place that people congregate to talk about the day's events or to get away from their worries.  It also looks like a place where people can go to get away from the heat or to just hide from something.  It could even be a place where someone lays their head to rest.  It shows the ground that is unkept and dead but also shows the green tree that is big and alive.

I chose the above photo as my object because it is so unclear and I stopped and stared at it for awhile before I was able to grasp some of the possible reasons this picture was taken.  To me it is a strong photo because it seems to tell a story about a woman that has been hiding behind something. It could symbolize the way she feels about herself or about someone else.  It brings up alot of questions, who is the person in the photo, what is the meaning of the berries in the bowl?  The questions I have about this photo makes it a strong image.

This image that I took in Richmond reminded me of the images of cars that Susan Worsham makes. I think its not very balenced but for some reson I like that about it. I think that the lighting is good considering it was a little cloudy on Saterday.

This is an old trunk of mine with a doilly and a Bible, I think it is a lot like the images Susan Worsham makes I tried a lot of ways to make the lighting better and this was what I thought was my best.

I have choosen three pictures

I have got my bible on our truck. I like the lighting i got its not dark or to bright.
Then I walked on a trail and I remembered this awesome picnic table in the water.
On that walk i saw this tree and it looks kool and i don't truly know what it is but i thought it was something to be seen.

Gas Station Attendant

Virginia War Memorial Guide

Norfolk County Object In Landscape

Still Life In Landscape

The portrait titled “Gas Station Attendant” is strong because of the composition and the most lighting on the model face. The model is under florescent lighting behind a safety glass creating reflections of the surrounding area while the photographer is setup outside in a cloudy white balance environment. The portrait titled “Virginia War Memorial Guide” is strong because of the lighting placement, composition and contrasting color. The image titled “Norfolk County Object In Landscape” is strong because of its lighting contrast. This image has a shadow in the shallow depth of field and different texture in the deep depth of field. This image also has bold horizontal and vertical lines without negative space. The next image titled “Still Life In Landscape” is bold because of its composition, contrasting color, horizontal curves and clear focus in the shallow and deep depth of field.

Photos for this weeks critique were taken at Belle Isle, great spot to shoot, going back this week to get some more shots around the whole island. First is just a portrait of a tree with a trail leading off into the woods behind and the second is a shot from the very tip of belle isle looking back at the city, I highly recommend anyone that has never been go down there and check it out for a couple hours.

Susan Worsham is the photographer we were told to look at for this weeks assignment and critique. The first picture I think is great, the lighting is good and focus is good. I really think the strongest thing about this photo is the look on the young mans face. You can tell he is hurting inside, and just going off the other photos in Susans portfolio I speculate that he was forced to join the Marine Corps to help pay the bills. He is a fresh recruit out of basic looking at the uniform and you can just feel his pain when looking into his eyes. The second picture is strong for one reason the colors of the car, nothing else really jumps out at me except that it is a goofy looking car with a wild paint job on it. The exposure is good to capture enough light from the sunset but not to much that it overpowers the shot.

Brother's Danville, VA

World Smallest Bible

The two images by Susan Worsham are strong because of its interesting composition.
The environmental portrait titled “Brother’s Danville, VA” has the most light on the boys which depicts the primary subject of the image. There’s shadow in the shallow depth with brightness in the deep depth of field while displaying an array of texture. Her still life object image titled “World Smallest Bible” is bold because of its composition and size; she also captured the primary colors and different texture within each color.

These are the photos I have selected for this week's assignment. My object picture is the one on the bottom with the orange hat and the house and my landscape is the one on the top with a unique view/angled of the lancscape.

I think what makes this image strong is bright light on the surface of the image and then the darkness behind the boy. I think the composition of it is strong because the blding is sort of framimg the boy just like the frame he is holding.

I think this image is strong because of the dark tattered bibles on the green of the tattered steps.I think the composition is works because it darker on half and lighter on half with the bibles right in the middle.

This week we focused on Susan Worsham. I loved her style of photography the pictures can be depicted in so many different ways and they're all the broken kind of beautiful. I chose the top photo as my still life picture. This picture is great to me because it's edgy. The scene that's set up make me wonder what he's looking at, he seems somewhat lost in life or in thought. The background is a beautiful flowering tree that provides a shadowing effect while he is still clearly depicted. The very back background seems like a railraod yard or somewhere that reminds me of the big bridges in Richmond. The fact that he has his shirt off is somewhat strange to me but hey, I can roll with it. The landscape shot that I chose was the picture of the Robert E. Lee Motel. Obviously the building is decayed and out of use and has been for years if not decades. I like the angle she captured the picture in. Ultimately I think that the angle is what made this picture so intresting and such a great landscape for me any way.

I have choosen this picture for the enviromental portrait. I like the lighting of the shoot and the way it lands on her face.

I have choosen this photo for still life or within a landscape. I love how nature climbs walls and fences. I like this also for the brightness you can see it all even the way the leaves are.
